Rule of 72...

On of my personal favorite math/personal finance shortcuts is the 'Rule of 72'. Put simple, this rule states that if you divide the rate of return into 72, you get the number of years necessary for a doubling of your assets.

So a 9% return gets you a doubling in 8 years, and a 6% return gets you a doubling in 12 years.

It's simple math, but it is easy to do in your head and reinforces the importance of return, of fees/costs, etc.
